As a freelance writer you will take on a variety of jobs. Some of them are big, some of them are small, and some may not end for a very long time. Along with the size of a project, you also have to think about what is being asked of you by the client. In other words, what is the job description?
It is important to know which types of freelance writing projects you like most. This way you can concentrate on them, and in turn have a more enjoyable time – day after day. To give you an idea of what I am talking about, some of the most common freelance writing projects include: keyword articles, feature articles, sales letters, marketing content, and website copy. Do you enjoy any of these projects? Do you have experience with any or all of them?
Don’t pass on a particular project because of how it sounds. Time after time I speak with freelance writers who are afraid of writing sales letters because of the word “sales.†They think they have to do something special. While it is true that writing a sales letter is a bit different than other types of content creation, it is something you should try if you are given the chance.
Hopefully you get to a point in your career where you can pick and choose which types of projects to take on. For now, experiment with many project types to see what you do and do not like. You may be surprised at what you find and how you decide to move forward.
Do you expect everything to go as planned within your freelance writing career? Even though you are always going to hope for the best, it goes without saying that you will run into some failures from time to time. If you are the type who will quit at the first sign of adversity, you will not last very long as a freelance writer.
There is no way around the fact that you will face tough times when you work as a freelancer. After all, you are in charge of every aspect of your career. Along with this come both good and bad experiences. You may be on a high today, but as soon as you know it things can change and you will be facing a major problem. It is how you deal with these situations that will determine whether or not you succeed.
It is important to learn from every experience that you face. If you fail, ask yourself why this happened and what you can do in the future to avoid the problem again. You know that you are going to fail from time to time. What you may not know is that you can learn a lot about yourself during the process.
You have to be willing to take the good with the bad. There are times when you will feel like another failure will put your freelance writing career on the rocks. But always remember that this is not the case. Dealing with ups and downs is a big part of achieving long term success as a freelance writer.
Every so often somebody asks me how long I have been a freelance writer. Some ask because they are generally interested in starting a career. Others want to see how long it took me to achieve success. Even though experience has a lot to do with where you are at in your freelance writing career, it is not the only thing to think about.
During the first year of my career I struggled on many levels. New freelance writers should expect the same, to a certain extent. I had a difficult time staying organized and managing my time. Fortunately, these problems began to fade away as the months went by. The more experience you gain the more knowledgeable you will become. In turn, it becomes much easier to deal with any issue – big or small.
I have been a freelance writer for five years or so. Do I know everything? Of course not. And guess what? In five more years I still won’t know everything about the industry. That being said, I am always going to try to gain more experience.
How long you have been a freelance writer does not matter as much as what you are doing to reach your goals. Instead of using your time on the job as an excuse for failure, stop and realize that you have what it takes right now to achieve greatness.
