Freelance Writing Income: July 2008

Last July, I posted my first freelance writing income report. That month, I earned $4,894.78. At the time I was quite comfortable with the income, and my goals have not changed much. That being said, I have had a bit more success so far in 2008.

As a freelance writer, it can be difficult to maintain a steady level of income month in and month out. I have found this out over the years, and it is safe to say that this is never going to change.

So how does my income in July 2008 stack up against the same month last year? Here are the income totals, first the stats from 2007:

Number of Completed Projects: 43
Payment by PayPal: 41
Payment by Check: 1
Payment by Bank Wire: 1
Total Income: $4,894.78

July 2008 Income

Number of Completed Projects: 31
Payment by PayPal: 21
Payment by Check: 9
Payment by Bank Wire: 1
Total Income: $10,134.23

A quick comparison shows that I earned more than twice as much in July of this year as I did during July of 2007. If you look even deeper, you will also see that I completed 12 fewer projects. This is the most important stat. It shows that I am working more efficiently, and that each project is paying at a higher rate.

Although my freelance writing income report has become quite popular, this is going to be the last one for the time being. Of course, this is not to say that I will never share income related details and stats in the future. Simply put, I have decided to keep this information private from here on out for a number of different reasons.

Congratulations once again, Chris. Ever since subscribing to your blog, I haven’t been commenting. But this is a special occasion. :-)

BTW, can you do something about the RSS feed font size? It is too tiny.

    Thanks for posting this!

Would you consider, to accompany this post, a few examples of the writing jobs you did in July?

You had 31 last month, but 43 July ’07, but how do we know the 31 from ’08 weren’t bigger, much more involved jobs requiring dozens more hours than the 43 from ’07?

I guess what I’m really asking is, just exactly how much writing, and what kind, is required to earn $10,000? I love writing and could literally do it all day and not grow weary. But I can’t imaging making that much for doing it no matter how much I love it or how long I spend at it.

I’d love to get your feedback. Thanks!

This is great! Good for you. I’d like more detail as well. I’m just starting and I see a lot of crappy jobs out there.

Congratulations and thanks for posting. Like bsravinin above, I subscribed a while ago but have never commented. However, since this is the last posting for your freelance profits (for a while) I decided to leave my two cents:

Thanks for being one of the leading reasons for me launching my freelance writing business and helping me to realize that doing what I love is worth more than a few dollars per article/project. Because of this assistance, I have exponentially increased my freelance writing income.

I saw the issues with posting your income boil over on a writing forum but to let you know, your reports do inspire some of us. The fact that you don’t list the details of your projects and leave it to the readers/writer’s imagination (not really, you talk about what you do all month long) should motivate each person to find what is most profitable for them, which I have. So thanks and I look forward to reading your blog as it grows!

I think Chris mentioned that he was not going to post an income report anymore. However, perhaps he can post the types of projects he had in each month like others have asked about?
