For many, becoming a freelance writer is a great way to own a business and have a lot of fun along the way. Unfortunately, many people miss their chance to take advantage of this great career. Don’t let this happen to you.

If you keep your eyes open and really want to become a freelance writer, it goes without saying that you will make your own opportunities. In other words, you don’t have to sit around and wait for the perfect time to follow your dream of becoming a freelance writer. Instead, you can “make your own luck” and see where you end up in the months to come.

Many people want to get involved with freelance writing, but for whatever reason they don’t put in the time to figure out how to get started. These are the people who miss their chance, time and time again. Even though you may think you have the rest of your life to follow this career path, soon enough you will find that your window of opportunity is closing. When you realize that you have a chance to get started you should take full advantage.

How you go about becoming a freelance writer is up to you. As long as you make this happen, it does not matter which steps you take along the way. Your chance to get started may be right in front of you. If you feel that now is the time to go for the gusto, get serious and start to make progress towards your goal. The last thing you want to do is miss your chance at becoming a freelance writer.

It is 12:23 am and I just sat down to do a little bit of work. Obviously, one of the things I am working on is my blog. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Why am I telling you all this? Simply put, I find it great that a freelance writer can work whenever he/she wants. There is no set schedule to follow. As long as you get your work done, your clients will be happy and so will you.

The freedom of being a freelance writer is clearly one of the biggest benefits of this career path. You can work normal business hours if you desire – this is what I usually do. But on the occasional day or night that you want to change things up, you can do that as well.

If you lead a busy life you may find freelance writing to be the perfect career. This way you can work when your schedule allows, without giving up the rest of your obligations. When it comes to jobs with freedom, there are none better (in my opinion) than freelance writing.

Are you on the fence as to whether or not you should enter the freelance writing industry? This is a common place to be. Early in my career I was the same way. Sure, I wanted to be a freelance writer but there was always something in the back of my mind asking if this was a good idea. Soon enough, though, I realized that I had to go all-in if I was going to achieve a high level of success.

Here are three things to think about if you are trying to decide on a career as a freelance writer:

1. Either go for the gusto or go home. In other words, you need to put all of your heart into becoming a freelance writer. If you don’t, you are not going to be excited with the results. Decide if you truly want to follow this career path, and if so, do whatever it takes to get moving in the right direction.

2. Going all in does not mean taking big risks. I don’t want you to think you have to do something extreme just because you want to become a freelance writer. If you are not comfortable quitting your current job just yet, by all means you should avoid doing so. If you want to work part-time before you jump in feet first, this is perfectly acceptable. It is important that you go all-in, but that you do so in a manner that will give you the best chance of succeeding. For some, this means being more patient.

3. Give it a test run. If you are unsure of where you stand, try out freelance writing for a couple days (such as a weekend) to see how you feel about it. There is nothing wrong with experimenting before you decide to go all-in. In fact, this is to be encouraged in most cases.

Going “all-in” can mean many different things. To you, this may mean quitting your job and becoming a full-time freelance writer today. For others, it may mean being more patient and giving this career a trial run. No matter what, make sure you are dedicated to deciding if freelance writing is right for you.

Landing a new client is a big deal. Not only does this mean more work and more money, but you should realize that it can lead to even more clients. Believe it or not, one freelance writing client can lead to another in no time at all. And guess what? This train can continue rolling, time and time again.

Here are two ways that you can turn one client into another:

1. Call on companies in the same industry and explain what you are doing for others. For instance, maybe you took on a blogging job for a real estate company. Why not call other agencies in your area, explain your services, and see if you can sign them up as well? Once you have industry experience it is much easier to land additional clients.

2. Referrals. You should never be afraid to ask your current clients if they can refer you to others. You may be surprised at the payoff. Even if you do not realize it right now, many of your clients are well connected. The good thing is that a large number of them may be looking for a writer – this is where you come into play.

To become a successful freelance writer you need to market your services, day in and day out. The above is a form of marketing. That being said, you do not have to put in nearly as much time and effort. Instead, you are letting your current clients do a lot of the work for you. How does that sound?

There are probably several good reasons why you decided to become a freelance writer. I love the freedom, potential earnings, and the ability to work at home. What excites you? While it is important to know what you enjoy about freelance writing, you also need to think about the details that don’t sit well in your mind. In other words, what don’t you like about freelance writing?

Just like any career, there are going to be things about freelance writing that you do not enjoy. Some of the more common drawbacks include:

1. Working alone. Although working at home is a huge benefit, it means that you will not have any daily interaction with other workers. Will this bother you? Time after time I hear from writers who are having a hard time with this part of their career.

2. You are in charge of everything. It is a big mistake to think that the only thing you will be doing is writing. Sure, your main duty is to produce content for clients. But along with this you are also responsible for sales, marketing, accounting, and many other tasks. Do you have the time and patience to handle all aspects of your business with success?

3. One on one client interaction. You may be surprised to hear that this is something many freelance writers do not enjoy. I love talking with clients via email, phone, and even in person. That being said, some freelancers feel the opposite way – they hate this part of the job. If you are not willing to interact with clients you should probably stay away from a freelance writing career.

Remember this: just because you don’t like a particular detail of freelance writing does not mean you should give up. No matter what job you are working, there are bound to be pros and cons. Freelance writing is no different.

For every person jumping into the freelance writing ring there is another giving up. Are you thinking about quitting on this career path? If so, you have the right to do so. But before you make a final decision, step back and take note of what you are doing. Giving up on freelance writing is not something you want to do on a whim. You need to think about every aspect of this decision, as well as how it will affect your career and financial lives.

Here are three questions to ask before you call it quits:

1. Where did I start? It is important to look back, consider where your career started, and see if you made the progress you were expecting. When you reflect on the past you may be surprised at what you find.

2. Where are you right now? After you look at where you have been it is time to consider where you stand at the present time. Are you earning enough money? Are you having fun with this career? This should be an easy question to answer.

3. Where can I go in the future if I stay on the same path? It is important to look ahead and determine where you will end up if you stay the course. If you see that you have a very real chance at reaching all your goals, now is not the time to give up.

Some people give up on freelance writing before they consider how much time they have put into growing their career. You may find that continuing to work hard will eventually lead you towards all your goals.

There may come a time when you have to stop working as a freelance writer – this happens all the time. Just make sure you are 100 percent sure of your decision.

As a freelance writer you will take on a variety of jobs. Some of them are big, some of them are small, and some may not end for a very long time. Along with the size of a project, you also have to think about what is being asked of you by the client. In other words, what is the job description?

It is important to know which types of freelance writing projects you like most. This way you can concentrate on them, and in turn have a more enjoyable time – day after day. To give you an idea of what I am talking about, some of the most common freelance writing projects include: keyword articles, feature articles, sales letters, marketing content, and website copy. Do you enjoy any of these projects? Do you have experience with any or all of them?

Don’t pass on a particular project because of how it sounds. Time after time I speak with freelance writers who are afraid of writing sales letters because of the word “sales.” They think they have to do something special. While it is true that writing a sales letter is a bit different than other types of content creation, it is something you should try if you are given the chance.

Hopefully you get to a point in your career where you can pick and choose which types of projects to take on. For now, experiment with many project types to see what you do and do not like. You may be surprised at what you find and how you decide to move forward.

Do you expect everything to go as planned within your freelance writing career? Even though you are always going to hope for the best, it goes without saying that you will run into some failures from time to time. If you are the type who will quit at the first sign of adversity, you will not last very long as a freelance writer.

There is no way around the fact that you will face tough times when you work as a freelancer. After all, you are in charge of every aspect of your career. Along with this come both good and bad experiences. You may be on a high today, but as soon as you know it things can change and you will be facing a major problem. It is how you deal with these situations that will determine whether or not you succeed.

It is important to learn from every experience that you face. If you fail, ask yourself why this happened and what you can do in the future to avoid the problem again. You know that you are going to fail from time to time. What you may not know is that you can learn a lot about yourself during the process.

You have to be willing to take the good with the bad. There are times when you will feel like another failure will put your freelance writing career on the rocks. But always remember that this is not the case. Dealing with ups and downs is a big part of achieving long term success as a freelance writer.

Every so often somebody asks me how long I have been a freelance writer. Some ask because they are generally interested in starting a career. Others want to see how long it took me to achieve success. Even though experience has a lot to do with where you are at in your freelance writing career, it is not the only thing to think about.

During the first year of my career I struggled on many levels. New freelance writers should expect the same, to a certain extent. I had a difficult time staying organized and managing my time. Fortunately, these problems began to fade away as the months went by. The more experience you gain the more knowledgeable you will become. In turn, it becomes much easier to deal with any issue – big or small.

I have been a freelance writer for five years or so. Do I know everything? Of course not. And guess what? In five more years I still won’t know everything about the industry. That being said, I am always going to try to gain more experience.

How long you have been a freelance writer does not matter as much as what you are doing to reach your goals. Instead of using your time on the job as an excuse for failure, stop and realize that you have what it takes right now to achieve greatness.

If you have any questions regarding this topic please feel free to leave a comment. Along with this, let all of us know how long you have been a freelance writer.

One of the biggest benefits of working as a freelance writer is that the costs are low. It does not take a lot of money to start a freelance writing career, and the same holds true as the years go by. Even though your expenses will not be large, there are times when investing in your career is the right thing to do. Do you know when to pull out your checkbook and reinvest some of the money you have been making?

1. When you need new equipment. If you need a computer, printer, or anything else for your office be sure to purchase it right away. The equipment and supplies that you use are essential to your overall success – don’t skimp in this area.

2. When you need help. There is nothing wrong with spending a few dollars to buy the latest version of Writer’s Market, or to hire a website designer. Everybody needs help at some point in time. When your time comes don’t be afraid to part with some money to get what you need.

3. When you need to market your services. There are some ways that you can market your freelance writing services for free. On the other hand, you may have to spend some money on this from time to time. This includes both query letters and online marketing. Even though you are spending money in the long run you are giving yourself the chance to earn it back, plus much more.

You may not want to spend money on your career everyday, but the three situations above call for some sort of investment.
